CIWM SHOW PREVIEW01 March 2004

The UK's leading waste management event will see over 300 leading manufacturers and service providers promoting the latest products, technologies and concepts. The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM)'s annual exhibition and conference takes place this year from 15 to 17 June in Torbay, Devon. It provides an unrivalled platform for those with an interest in environmental management to meet and review the latest ideas and technologies and debate best practice and the way forward with their peers.

The show is located on five linked sites. Among the 300 or more exhibitor stands on Middle, North and South Greens, visitors can see a wide range of waste related products and services, including:
- Waste disposal equipment: including shredders, compactors and balers; recycling and composting; landfill technology and equipment; and incineration
- Containers: recycling, wheeled, clinical, waste and many more
- Vehicles and ancillaries: including electric vehicles; refuse vehicles; chassis manufacturers; and weighing equipment
- Sweepers and ancillaries
- Software - Safety equipment
- Integrated waste management
- Energy from waste
There will also be suppliers of advice and information, including
- Government departments
- Waste/environmental organisations and publications. For instance the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB) will have information on qualifications in waste management, including all aspects of NVQs and the Certificate of Technical Competence scheme.

Preston Green will be the site of the new Education & Technology Centre, where DEFRA and the CIWM will both be hosting a series of seminars and focus groups.

The CIWM conference programme stimulates ideas for the technological development needed to address the practical and sustainable management of wastes in the future, not just locally but with concern for global issues.

The theme of the conference, 'Beyond the Horizon', will focus thought and discussion towards innovation and new technologies, rather than simply on improving existing options for waste disposal and treatment.

Conference and workshop sessions include:
- Waste as a resource
- Hazardous waste
- Landfill
- Producer responsibility
- Thermal treatment
- Zero waste
- Alternative technologies
- Waste strategies
- Public attitudes and awareness.

Running alongside the main CIWM Conference on the second day of the show (Wednesday 16 June) is the CIWM Waste Producers' Day. This event, chaired by Sir John Harman, chairman of the Environment Agency, is designed to help delegates to recognise the increased pressures on waste producers, and understand how companies can grasp the opportunity to trade on their sustainable credentials. Stephen Timms, Energy Minister, will deliver a keynote speech.
