Viridor clocks up 30 years of tyre support from Vacu-Lug24 July 2014
Tyre company Vacu-Lug and waste management organisation Viridor have clocked up 30 years of working together, with Vacu-Lug providing tyre supply and service for Viridor's contract with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.
Viridor's 200-strong fleet includes 110 trucks, 55 front-end loaders, 14 forklift container handlers and 22 wheeled excavators, all of which are used to manage waste and recycling for over one million households in the Greater Manchester area.
The front-end loaders are predominantly JCB, Case and Cat brands, and are fitted with 20.5R25 and 23.5R25 Vacu-Lug Process- type (Mortrak) Mtk 5 104s, which are puncture- proof and designed for the waste industry.
At the railhead at Viridor's Longley Lane facility, where four of its 25-tonne container handling forklift trucks operate, vehicle downtime must be avoided to meet train timetables. Here, new and remould tyres are supplied and inspected on a rolling monthly cycle. They are rotated through different positions on each vehicle to optimise wear and increase tyre life.
This process also enables Vacu-Lug to monitor each tyre so it can be removed from the vehicle for remoulding for a second and third time, which further reduces costs for Viridor.
A large stock of slave wheels and tyres is held at the main workshop to meet the forward tyre replacement programme. Vacu-Lug provides Viridor with 24-hour support, via its in-house technicians and tyre service partners.
Commenting on the 30-year relationship, Viridor's asset maintenance engineer Dave Rogerson says: "Waste handling is a continual process which requires uninterrupted mobility of all support vehicles and wheeled equipment. To this end, the Vacu-Lug team works closely with Viridor ... to ensure minimum downtime and maximum efficiency."
