UK anaerobic digesters installation reach 250 mark 08 May 2013
BCI Process has completed the design, fabrication and installation of mechanical services for an anaerobic digestion plant at Leciestershire farming firm AC Shropshire – bringing the total number of AD plants in the UK to 250.
Overall, the company's AD plant is expected to produce 2MW of electricity and around 43,000 tonnes of liquid organic fertiliser for use on the farm, which covers 320 hectares.
AC Shropshire runs arable, beef and pig production and has a long-established waste food processing business, so was ideally suited to the installation of an AD plant.
Engineering contractor PROjEN prepared the initial process concept, which was used by BCI Process and developed into a 3D design for the pipework services and support structures.
All pipework was constructed from light gauge metric stainless steel, and with most fabrication completed at its Keighley, West Yorkshire, factory, BCI says it was able to provide a steady stream of quality-assured plant for site engineers to complete the installation on time and within budget.
The completed plant will process all 20,000 tonnes of manure generated by farming operations on the site and will be blended with around 25,500 tonnes of human food by-products. Wastes will be mixed before passing through three 5,000m³ fermenting tanks at a rate of 100—120 tonnes per day in a continuous process lasting more than 30 days.
The gas produced will be cleaned and supplied to a CHP (combined heat and power) plant, generating heat and power for the farm and other operations – with residual electricity supplied to the grid.
The liquid residue from this process will be stored in two tanks for up to six months prior to spreading on the land.
