Strategic partnership for Liquid Air Energy Storage06 July 2012

UK-based Highview Power Storage, developer of the liquid air energy process, is partnering with German Messer Group, the world's largest owner-managed international industrial gases company.

Messer Group will use Highview's cryogenic energy storage technology while Highview gins access to Messer's engineering expertise in gas liquefaction.

"With our pilot plant built out and fully operational last year [hosted by SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) at Slough Heat & Power], signing our first commercial agreements was always the next key step," comments Highview CEO Gareth Brett.

"We now have feasibility studies and front end engineering work to undertake, but I am confident that we shall see the ground being broken for the first multi-MW plants next year."

Highview's liquid air energy storage plant (LAES) is one of only a few technologies that can be delivered today in the 50 to 100MW range with hundreds of MWh of energy stored. Most important, its technology relies on mature components assembled in a novel process.

The agreement between Highview and Messer Group is specifically for the development of LAES systems integrated with industrial gas plants.
