Split bearings slice stoppages for Belgian food processor 02 September 2014
Roeselare, Belgium-based food processor D'Arta has solved problems with its spinach slicing machine by installing split plummer block bearings, from Revolvo.
A spokesperson for the company explains that the slicing machine had a driven shaft supported by one fixed and one floating bearing at either end, each in conventional plummer block housings.
Not only were they failing, due to over-greasing and water contamination of the existing plummer block assemblies, but maintenance procedures were long and costly.
Revolvo offered its latest split plummer block bearing as a replacement, partly for its potential to massively reduce the time required to change bearings, but also for its ability to handle expansion and axial movement.
Four bearing assemblies were installed for the 100mm shaft diameter, complete with a Walker sprung garter-seal to prevent the ingress of water.
Revolvo also carried out on-site training for maintenance engineers, as well as assisting with the installation of the bearings and realignment of the motor and gearbox.
D'Arta says payback was less than eight months, taking into account improved reliability, and adds that additional units are now being installed in other areas of its production facility.
Six captive drives on a conveyor section have already been replaced, while a further three processing lines are still in the planning stage for using Revolvo SRB bearings.
SRB split plummer block bearings are fully interchangeable with standard SNL/SN/SD/SAF series plummer blocks, making them suitable for a larger range of applications.
