Siemens launches new controller generation 14 February 2013

In a blaze of publicity this week (12 February 2013), Siemens Industry launched its latest PLC, the Simatic S7-1500, as a next generation controller family for medium to high-end machine and plant automation.

New features include souped-up system performance, not just through new processor power, but also an improved backplane that puts all PLC modules straight on full-speed ProfiNet.

Beyond that, there is massive functionality integrated as standard, including motion control, multi-dimensional security, safety applications and diagnostics.

Simon Keogh, for Siemens Industry, explains that all are easy to implement, commission, operate and maintain, using Siemens' recently upgraded Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) portal (now at V12), which provides for drag and drop project engineering at every level, with all disciplines tightly integrated.

"With the launch of Simatic S7-1500, we are introducing a controller family for the next generation for medium to high-end machine and plant automation," states Keogh.

"The controllers offer greater efficiency, thanks to the innovative design for simple commissioning and safe operation. Importantly, integration into the TIA portal enables simple engineering and low project costs."

In fact, Simatic S7-1500 controllers are being launched in stages. Initially, the range comprises three CPU types 1511, 1513 and 1516 for medium performance. Each is also available as a failsafe (F) version, for safety applications, and choices cover the number of interfaces, bit performance, display size and memory.

CPU modules can take up to 32 expansion modules, covering everything from motion control to the full range of I/O, as per Siemens' existing Simatic ET 200MP series.
