McGills shaves 40 per cent off steam energy bill 28 October 2011
McGills of Kensington is reporting that by changing out three ageing vertical steam boilers for one new 2,600 kg/hr high-efficiency unit from CFB Boilers, the plant has reduced its energy bills by £40,000 per year – and cut a shift from production, saving further expenditure.
The firm, which operates a large production laundry site and retail outlets throughout London, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Director Rezza Khoshnam explains that two of the boilers were beginning to fail, so he contacted several steam boiler specialists.
"CFB Boilers went above and beyond all of them. They were very quick to solve the immediate issues, and also suggested a solution to improve the business in the long term," he states.
As business continuity was the priority, Essex-based CFB Boilers arranged for a hire boiler to be delivered and installed on site, to compensate for reduced output.
"We knew straight away that a larger horizontal steam boiler would be far more efficient, cost-effective and better-performing than the three vertical boilers," comments Derek Parish, director of CFB Boilers.
"To get an accurate calculation, we analysed the energy consumption of the existing system and then compared this with our Universal Series boiler," he continues. "We estimated that McGills could reduce their energy costs by around 40% andbecause this was such a high figure, it meant that our solution qualified for a Carbon Trust interest-free loan."
Khoshnam says that as soon as the new boiler was commissioned, there was an immediate and significant improvement in steam availability and quality. "Instead of cycling of the steam pressure, we were able to hold a steady 10 bar. This increased the heat going to the ironers and dryers, and because of this, I've been able to reduce from a three-day shift to a two-day shift."
"The difference that this has made to the business is fantastic. Not only have we cut down an entire shift, thanks to better performance from the boiler, but our energy bills have reduced very significantly."
