IET names 2014 Achievement Award winners 07 October 2014
This year's IET Achievement Awards winners include: personalised medicine pioneer Professor Christofer Toumazou, leading broadcast engineer Keith Hayler; and Alexander Bennett – a BAE Systems chief engineer at the age of 29 working on jet fighters, naval ships and ground vehicles.
Faraday medal winner Professor Toumazou invented a portable and rapid genome sequencing system, which has since become a multi-billion dollar industry, enabling DNA to be analysed within minutes.
Achievement medal winner Keith Hayler contributed to the deployment of the world's first digital radio and television platforms, including Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB).
Mike Sargeant Career Achievement Award for Young Professionals winner Alexander Bennett is in charge of the engineering and design teams across many BAE Systems locations in Scotland and England, and is responsible for delivering a £350 million project for the business.
Other winners include: Dr Ronjon Nag, who collects the Mountbatten Medal; Gavin Campbells who gains the Mensforth Manufacturing Gold Medal; and Professor Ravi Silva, who icks up the JJ Thomson Medal for Electronics.
Other Achievement Medal winners are Dr Alfonso Farina, Professor Barrie Mecrow, Professor Alan Murray and Professor Bahram Jalali.
And the Sir Henry Royce Medal for Young Professionals goes to Christopher Spargo, while Ashish Kumar gains the IET's Paul Fletcher Award.
"The Achievement Awards recognise individuals who have made a truly outstanding contribution to engineering and technology, from talented young professionals through to engineers at the pinnacle of their careers," states IET president William Webb.
The winners, nominated by their peers and selected by a panel of judges, will be invited to collect their awards at an awards ceremony on 19 November 2014.
