Engineer Surveyor of the Year named by BES 21 May 2013

BES (the Bureau of Engineer Surveyors – a professional sector of the Society of Operations Engineers) has named Gary Higgins as its first BES Engineer Surveyor of the Year.

The award scheme was launched by BES (the professional engineering body for engineer surveyors who assess plant for legal compliance and technical risk) in a bid to promote their work in encouraging safety in the workplace.

Higgins, who works as the East Anglia regional engineering manager for HSB Engineering Insurance Services, was chosen for his passion and commitment to the role.

"Engineer surveyors are conscientious professionals that ensure safety-critical engineering is maintained across a wide spectrum of industry," comments Higgins.

"Career partners like the BES are there to help and support us in these duties," he continues.

"I am delighted to win this award and there has been a great sense of pride within HSB Engineering Insurance, which reflects the standing of the BES within our industry."

Higgins began his career as a ground support equipment technician in the RAF before joining an engineering company specialising in lifting equipment.

He gained an HNC in mechanical engineering and began examining lifting and handling equipment, minor pressure systems and, following specialist training, power presses – including using NDT (Non-destructive testing) techniques for internal components – and local exhaust ventilation plant.

"It was with great pleasure [that] the Bureau of Engineer Surveyors Council chose Gary Higgins as our Engineer Surveyor of the year 2013," comments BES chair Alan Fitzpatrick.

"Gary's application highlighted his abilities as an engineer, a motivated leader and a manager. He is keen to highlight the work an engineer surveyor does in keeping the UK a safe place to live and work."
