Boiler water treatment claims exaggerated: warning 30 January 2014
Exaggerated claims are being made for the energy saving benefits of boiler water treatment. That's the warning from independent energy consultant Vilnis Vesma, of Vesma.com.
In a paper 'Energy saving through boiler water treatment: limits of plausibility', he shows that the practical maximum achievable by cleaning both waterside and fireside surfaces is likely to be of the order of 7%. That, he insists, is in the range of good maintenance.
"Unscrupulous vendors are preying on customers who lack knowledge of combustion processes," he states.
Vesma is now running one-day training courses for non-specialists responsible for energy management programmes.
"[The course] includes detailed treatment of a range of key technical topics so you will leave with some concrete ideas. You will also be better equipped to rebuff the snake-oil merchants."
The next course is in Newcastle on Tuesday 25 February, and there are others in Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Exeter.
