Best and brightest engineering apprentices revealed 23 August 2013
The IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) has today (22 August 2013) revealed the nine finalists in its competition to recognise the best and brightest apprentices and technicians.
They are now set to join television presenter Liz Bonnin at a London Awards ceremony in November, where the winners will be announced.
The finalists are: Anthony Benton, Lydia Feasey, Andrew Smith, Stephen Gould, Andrew Knowles, Michael Major, Staff Sergeant Cheesman, Staff Sergeant David Emmerson and Corporal D Haggarty.
According to IET president professor Andy Hopper, all displayed outstanding engineering or technical understanding and ability, and were also recognised for their ambassadorial roles in schools, through volunteer work and as role models.
"The finalists were selected from a stellar line up of apprentices as some of the most exceptional young individuals working in their field," states professor Hopper.
"The Apprentice and Technician Awards scheme is particularly special because it acknowledges the significant impact that young people are having on engineering businesses through boosting productivity and enhancing the skills base," adds a spokesperson from GCHQ, which is sponsoring the awards.
The Apprentice and Technician Awards are part of the IET's Inspiring Engineering Excellence Awards Series, which last year provided more than £500,000 to celebrate excellence and research in the sector and encourage the next generation of engineers and technicians.
The awards ceremony will take place in London on Wednesday, 20 November 2013, where the winner in each category will walk away with £1,000, two years free membership of the IET and payment of their professional registration fees.
