BBC Elstree powers mobile air-skates with CompAir 04 July 2013

The BBC is using a standalone, CompAir L18FS airstation clean at Elstree to provide dry air at up to 7 bar for air-skate equipment that moves audience seating platforms around the studios.

Unlike the studios at Television Centre, which had their own compressed air ring main, the new studios had no air production so a fast, simple solution was required.

Air is discharged directly on to the studio floor from the air skates, meaning that the compressor selected also had to guarantee clean and moisture-free, as any water or oil could present a health and safety risk.

Gardner Denver distributor Air Energy carried out an initial audit to assess air demand, based on the maximum weight of the audience platform, and the firm then supplied two trial units to the department.

The L18FS airstation oil-lubricated, screw compressor has been mounted on the air receiver and packaged complete with a refrigerant dryer, reducing the unit's footprint by 55%.

The department has also mounted the complete unit on to a trailer for transportation between studios.
