ABB service to extend expensive transformer life 15 August 2014

ABB's UK transformer service team has launched a refurbishment and upgrading service that targets the two most common points of failure for power distribution transformers up to 132kV – the tap-changer and bushings.

Replacing one or both of these provides a cost-effective route to a life -extension of at least 10 years, according to the firm, pointing to the UK's vast fleet of mid-life transformers.

The service is available for transformers from any manufacturer, and is also aimed at older designs no longer supported by the original manufacturer.

As part of the service, ABB says it will provide either a direct replacement for the tap-changer or, depending on suitability, an upgrade to a state-of-the-art vacuum tap-changer.

The brittle and easily damaged porcelain oil impregnated bushings are then replaced with modern resin-impregnated (RIP) bushings or the next generation of dry-type resin-impregnated synthetic (RIS) bushing.

The enormous costs of power transformer failures provide ample incentive for operators to ensure reliability and availability throughout the life cycle of these key assets.

Transformers cost from £1 million and when they fail the financial impact can be ruinous.
