ABB and ESC launch functional safety e-learning 21 August 2014

ABB's Safety Lead Competency Centre (SLCC) and Engineering Safety Consultants (ESC) have launched an e-learning technical training course on failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).

The duo say that the course is aimed at ensuring functional safety in compliance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 specifically covering safety instrumented systems (SIS).

"In many cases, the information on such devices requires intelligent interpretation and analysis to ensure that they are designed and engineered in accordance with the requirements of the standard," says a spokesperson.

"Competency in FMEA is a cornerstone of effective design, implementation and integration of complex safety related devices," he adds.

Importantly, given that attendance at an equivalent two-day training course is increasing difficult, the e-learning approach can be designed around engineers' busy schedules, while still ensuring the rigour of feedback testing and worked examples.

The course covers FMECA and FMEDA in in terms of IEC 61508.
