Entitled ‘The Connected World’, the Symposium is an interactive full day event that will explore the next stage of developments in data management for maintenance and operations engineering.
So, how can the potential for ultra-connectivity and mass data be converted into an actual benefit, where faults in maintenance are predicted in advance and accidents are eliminated?
SOE CEO Bruce McGill explains: “This event will challenge your preconceptions of what connectivity means and how it can be used. For engineers responsible for inspection, maintenance and management in a multitude of industry sectors, it is an essential CPD event that cannot be missed.”
The morning session will feature a keynote address from Engineering Council trustee and former chief inspector of the UK's Rail Accident Investigation Branch, Carolyn Griffiths, who will explore how engineering expertise and risk analysis can turn troublesome projects into successful ones.
New SOE Patron Sir John Parker will open the session.
Two panel sessions will complete the morning schedule. Both will delve into the digitisation process, the industry-wide benefits from data sharing on safety regulations, and how connected industrial devices can be used effectively, while recognising their capabilities and limitations.
The theme of connectivity will be broken down into industry-specific streams in the early afternoon, when delegates will choose between three distinct courses: Commercial Vehicle Technology; Fixed Plant Operation and Maintenance; and Risk Safety and Engineering Competence.
Tony Fong, engineering manager at Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, will explain how remote maintenance and digital troubleshooting of offshore wind turbines is transforming operations
In another of the stream sessions, Mostyn Bullock, director at Tenos, will define the competence in fire engineering post-Grenfell, while Stuart Cottrell, head of advanced engineering at ADL, will discuss how automation in the bus and coach sector is becoming a reality in Scotland, and what will be the implications on the passenger carrying industry.
Further panel discussions will follow the streamed sessions featuring, amongst others, Society for the Environment CEO Emma Wilcox, before a closing keynote will bring the curtain down on the first SOE Symposium.
